Below is some information
on the local area, in case you are planning to stop over locally
when visiting us here at Goodalls Caravans.
Holmfirth
Holmfirth is the main town in the valley which is ideally situated
for all the major centres in the north of England.
The border with South Yorkshire is only three miles away,
the Greater Manchester border is five miles over the Pennines,
and just half-a-dozen miles to the border with Derbyshire.
Sheffield, Barnsley, Wakefield, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford
and Halifax are all within reasonable commuting distance.
Holmfirth is known to many people for its "Last of the
Summer Wine" fame, the place where the BBC film the long
running comedy series, which has been broadcast on the small
screen for more than a quarter of a century! The success of
the show has put the area firmly on the tourist trail and
made a huge impact in the town.
On a Sunday and particularly Bank Holidays, the town is busy
with visitors looking at the shops and galleries, and exploring
the narrow alleys, or ginnels, which climb steeply out of
the town. There are even enthusiastic guides waiting near
the bus station to greet tourist coaches as they pull into
the town.
The guides are often be seen leading a large throng of people
to view "Sids Café" and "Noras
Steps" and other places made famous in the TV series.
The Holme Valley is also very popular with walkers and wildlife
enthusiasts, the route of the famous Pennine Way can be picked
up only a short distance away. There are scores of books on
local walks available from the library, Tourist Information
Centre and some of the fine bookshops in the town.
Apart from the town itself and the breathtaking scenery,
there are some wonderful attractions waiting for the visitors.
These range from the CragRats Theatre and Café Bar
on Dunford Road; the Picturedrome Cinema and postcard musuem
in the centre of town, and the fabulous Summer Wine Exhibition
and TV location tours direct from Sids Café!
